Hi Jerwam. Great stuff you are doing here in collaboration with Fred.
I’m curious about any pre-installed applications in V1.5. Did the V1.0 hacked (non-upgradable) Android Auto/YouTube/Netflix and so forth appear? How about that non removable Korean application? (which would have been nice to delete…)
On V1.5 it would be nice to use official upgradable Google versions of those 3 apps…..
PS: I’ve sent my V1.0 on to another fellow here in Canada so that’s about all I think of for the list now. Spending my time with the Wireless Android Auto device.Space_BisonParticipantApril 9, 2021 at 6:13 pmPost count: 19
@Nokiaman1978 I tried updating the existing CD Android Auto app via Playstore and it borked the device, had to use Mirriod to undue the update. (CD Screen completely blacked out)
Are you suggesting sideloading the latest AA apk will work to update the installed CD AA app? Just wondering……Space_BisonParticipantApril 1, 2021 at 1:55 pmPost count: 19
I could not get my CD to work properly with this method. Google maps failed as soon as I started a route while Waze sorta worked. In Waze, the vehicle location was tracked but was “off” by several hundreds of meters. Bluetooth GPS shows I was connected to the phone (P30 Pro) and I could see the phone & lat/long coordinates while using the app. Bluetooth GPS Output on the phone indicated it was connected to the client and mapped a great many satellites. Not really sure why the accuracy was so wonky.
The CD Dongle app in the end provides me with better navigation (accuracy) with both Waze and TomTom Go. Google maps does not work however (fails same as above).Space_BisonParticipantMarch 18, 2021 at 11:28 pmPost count: 19
AP756, I tried those exact steps and had the following issues:
First I reset the time zone to my proper location using hidden settings and then rebooted. After reboot I checked the time settings via the CD system settings app and found they had not changed. Maybe their settings override Googles?
At the same time I installed the GPS Reset app (or one of them). To test it out I took it to the car and parked it in a clear spot and then ran “reset” the CD found zero satellites after sitting for 10 minutes.
I also just happened to notice that the Indiegogo page now has removed built in GPS as a feature and instead it says “GPS – Navigation works via Android Phone Screen Mirroring (firmware update coming March 20).” Guess the only way to use for navigation will be through the mirroring, which works on a couple of apps for me at least.Space_BisonParticipantMarch 18, 2021 at 11:15 pmPost count: 19Space_BisonParticipantMarch 17, 2021 at 4:21 pmPost count: 19
Dudek, I did nothing out of the ordinary to connect the CD to the P30 Hotspot. Just turned on Hotspot in the Mobile network section and then did the setup to connect to it via the Car Dongle itself (while in the car of course). At that time I also enabled CD to connect to a few of my home wifi channels as well (for Mirroid) – however Hotspot is the CD default connection.
For Bluetooth I just used the CD Bluetooth tethering process under Phone Settings (in CD Settings app). Connected to phone hotspot first and then did bluetooth. Phone shows it is connected to CD for calls and media. However, I also enabled some Developer Networking options, in the phone which may have done something (not sure). On the phone the things I enabled were Hardware accelerated tethering and Bluetooth auto-connect.
I then further fiddled with bluetooth settings on the CD, which I was able to access after obtaining Developer access and installing an app called Hidden Settings from the app store. Here I also enabled Hardware accelerated tethering. Lastly, on the CD under the Sound setting I made sure Bluetooth audio and Radio+Navigation Sound were toggled to On.
That’s about it as far as I can remember….Space_BisonParticipantMarch 17, 2021 at 3:54 amPost count: 19
Late Night Update: Google Maps does not pick up GPS via the GPS mirror at all. Other nav apps noted above work fine.Space_BisonParticipantMarch 17, 2021 at 12:25 amPost count: 19
Well after performing the OTA upgrade today and installing the not recommended APK file that Tommy posted……..I had success!!! Both Waze and TomTomGo picked up the phones GPS signals and I was able to use them like the USB tethered AA. On my test drive each Nav program tracked speeds correctly and I was able to program in a route (and use it) without the GPS losing signal. With Google Maps however I did not fair so well…..lost GPS as soon as I started the route. Not sure why???
Using GPS Test on the phone (HuaweiP30 Pro) showed about 40 satellites. Hopefully when the prime time APK is released that Google issue will go away.
CD now shows OS Version 2.1.46 and SW Version 1.2.90Space_BisonParticipantMarch 11, 2021 at 8:47 pmPost count: 19
Hi Tommy and Forum folks. I have a question I’m hoping one of you can answer. I have an old bluetooth Pharos iGPS-360 CF device and I’m wondering if it might work with the CD? Using it with a old WinCE device you had to configure a com port but I’m hoping I would not need to figure that out in Android.
Thanks for any response.Space_BisonParticipantMarch 9, 2021 at 4:40 amPost count: 19Space_BisonParticipantMarch 9, 2021 at 12:46 amPost count: 19
There were some questions about working in hot or cold temps. Where I am today it is +2C and the device works when you are flipping through the screens and trying various apps HOWEVER I had to sit in an outside parking lot for an hour or so waiting for the wife, so I thought why not watch a movie I had loaded. Anyway long story short, using VLC I started to watch said movie and about 15 minutes in the dongle died……shut right down due to it overheating. Had to wait 10-15 minutes for it to cool down before it started working again (held it outside to speed cooling…). What this means in summer heat conditions is anyone’s guess.
PS: When it ran the movie it was pretty smooth except for video/audio not syncing.Space_BisonParticipantMarch 8, 2021 at 8:14 pmPost count: 19
I have just completed this new firmware update as posted by Tommy above. Not sure it did anything other than wipe the CD. All the stuff I had installed directly via the CD Update mechanics (on board) were gone. OS version is 2.1.45 while SW version is 1.2.90 which if I remember is the same as what I had after using CD Update in Settings. GPS still does not work on any applications, at least to give me correct location. Tracking on Google Maps works but not for “selecting a route”. GPS quits after you start route.
Not sure what the plan is now…..Space_BisonParticipantMarch 8, 2021 at 6:06 pmPost count: 19
@jrwill What blocker did you use? Tried a few different ones with Edge and Waterfox and they didn’t stop that god darned thing……Space_BisonParticipantMarch 3, 2021 at 8:10 pmPost count: 19
Give it a try. It should work with any wifi signal, including GMC’s. I’ve connected it to multiple home wifi networks, including my phone hotspot, while testing the device in my car (while it was parked in my attached garage).
Hopefully your GPS will work as it is supposed to when you do connect.Space_BisonParticipantFebruary 28, 2021 at 1:09 amPost count: 19
I’ve tested the pre-installed Google Maps & Waze along with recently installed TomTomGo and Here WeGo. Waze, TTG & Here are out to lunch by 200+ kms from my actual location.
Google Maps shows correct vehicle position on the screen map…until the vehicle moves off the shown map. Meaning the map does not follow or track vehicle position.
As reported above when connected via Mirroid with my local wifi network these other apps find my exact location.
